The Life Table Analysis on the Termination Rates of Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices in Seoul

Abstract
The present study was designed to apply the life table technique to calculate the probabilities of terminations and the retention rates of the Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices.
The author also observed distribution of the type of termination of IUD, termination for all reasons, rates of expulsion and removal and rate of pregnancy for 12 months towards 1065 women who had been inserted with IUDs from July 1976 by June 1977. IUD acceptors had been sampled among married eligible women lived in Dongdaemun-Gu and Yongsan-Gu, Seoul.
The purpose of this survey can be specified as below:
1. To know the age group performing the first insertion of IUD.
2. To know the fertility level of women when they accepted the IUD firstly.
3. To know the duration of IUD use according to the demographic characteristics and fertility level of mother.
4. To investigate monthly rates and cumulative rates of termination, retention, expulsion and removal of devices through life table technique.
5. To find out the differences in termination rates of IUD according to retrospective cohort study from that through life table technique.
As the results of this survey following conclusion was obtained.
The average frequency of pregnancy was 3.9 and the average frequency of live birth experienced was 2.2 Three. percent of all women experienced still birth, 10 percent experienced the spontaneous abortion, and 70 percent experienced the artificial abortionThe women who had experienced artificial abortion 8 times or more were eight (0.77%) and those of 5 times or more were seventy-one (6.7%).
The proportion of retention was decreasing as the month increases 92.5% at end of first month, 85.1% at the end of second month and turned out to 34.8% at the end of thirteenth month after insertion, while the proportion of removal was 7.5 percent during the first month, 7.0 percent during the second month, 9.2 percent during the third month and reduced slowly thereafter, the cumulative, proportion of removal was 64.3 percent through out the all period from insertion.
As for the rate of termination according to retrospective cohort study, the accidental pregnancy rate was 0.1 percent, the natural expulsion rate was 0.8 percent, the natural expulsion rate was 0.8 percent, the removal rate occupied roughly 44.8 percent and the continuing rate was 54.2 percent.
In opposition to this, the cumulative rates of terminations were 0.2 percent, for pregnancy, 0.9 percent for natural expulsion, 69.3 percent for removal and the rate of continuing users was 34.8 percent throughout 12 months.
